Current Issues — Imo State 2026
Imo State in 2026 is being governed by Governor Hope Uzodimma, who began his second term on 15 January 2024. His administration continues to operate under the 3R agenda of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery, with infrastructure, electricity, industrial development and economic expansion among the major priorities.
The state's biggest fiscal development is the 2026 Budget of Economic Breakthrough. The approved budget is approximately ₦1.44 trillion, representing a major increase from the ₦807 billion 2025 budget. About ₦1.201 trillion is earmarked for capital expenditure, while approximately ₦238.5 billion is allocated to recurrent expenditure. The exceptionally high capital component places infrastructure and development projects at the centre of the state's 2026 economic programme.
Electricity remains one of the administration's most important economic priorities. The state is pursuing the Orashi electricity initiative, designed to develop an integrated electricity generation, transmission and distribution system capable of supplying the state's 27 local government areas. The administration has described the programme as part of its effort to move Imo away from what it calls a generator-dependent economy.
Imo is also strengthening its industrial and energy base. The ANOH Gas Plant is an important component of the state's wider economic strategy, with gas development expected to support industrialisation, electricity generation and employment. The administration is also promoting agricultural and investment opportunities as part of efforts to diversify the state economy.
On workers' welfare, Imo State approved the implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage in November 2024. The government has subsequently highlighted payroll reforms, biometric verification and the Imo State Social Benefit Number as mechanisms for improving the administration of salaries and pensions.
Security remains an important governance issue. The state government has continued to rely on security agencies and community-based vigilance structures to address insecurity, particularly concerns involving armed attacks, criminal activity and disruptions to economic activity. The security environment remains an important factor in determining investment, transportation and business confidence across the state.
Politically, Imo has a strong APC presence in the current federal delegation. The three senators representing Imo North, Imo East and Imo West are Patrick Ndubueze, Ezenwa Onyewuchi and Osita Izunaso respectively. Onyewuchi represents Imo East, while Izunaso represents Imo West. Ndubueze is the current senator for Imo North and also serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
Imo has 27 local government areas, three senatorial districts and 10 federal constituencies. According to INEC's 2023 General Election report, the state had 2,419,922 registered voters, of whom 2,280,339 collected their PVCs.
Population estimates remain an important demographic consideration for planning. NPC population projections put Imo at 5,265,082 people in 2020, with the population continuing to rise in subsequent projection years. Using the projection trend, Imo's estimated population for 2026 is approximately 5.85 million people. This figure should be treated as a demographic projection rather than the result of a new population census.
