Current Issues — Kano State 2026
Kano State in 2026 is being governed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The administration entered 2026 with a record ₦1.477 trillion approved budget, officially titled the Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development. The budget was passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and assented to by the governor in January 2026. It places strong emphasis on infrastructure, education, healthcare, social protection and economic development.
The 2026 budget provides approximately ₦1.048 trillion for capital expenditure and about ₦429.72 billion for recurrent expenditure, giving the state a strong capital-investment orientation. The approved budget also projects about ₦138.44 billion in internally generated revenue and ₦909.94 billion from the Federation Account as part of recurrent revenue expectations. The large capital allocation reflects the administration's stated intention to accelerate infrastructure and human-capital development.
Kano's internally generated revenue has improved substantially in recent years. National Bureau of Statistics data put Kano's 2024 IGR at approximately ₦74.77 billion, compared with ₦37.38 billion in 2023. Kano Internal Revenue Service later reported that the state generated about ₦102 billion in IGR in 2025, reflecting continued efforts to improve tax administration, compliance and internally generated revenue collection.
The state remains Nigeria's most populous state by many current population projections. For 2026, Kano's population is estimated at about 17.51 million. This is a projection rather than a new national population census figure and should therefore be presented on the website as an estimated 2026 population. With a land area of approximately 20,131 square kilometres, this produces an estimated population density of roughly 870 people per square kilometre.
Politically, Kano continues to have significant influence at the federal level. The state has three senators: Barau I. Jibrin representing Kano North, Rufa'i Sani Hanga representing Kano Central and Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila representing Kano South. Senator Barau Jibrin is particularly prominent because he serves as Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate.
At the state legislative level, Jibril Ismail Falgore serves as Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. The state has 40 State Assembly constituencies, 24 federal constituencies and 44 Local Government Areas. The judiciary is headed by Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, Kano State's first female Chief Judge.
Security, unemployment, poverty, infrastructure deficits and pressure on public services remain major governance concerns. Kano's large and rapidly growing population creates substantial demand for education, healthcare, water supply, sanitation, roads, housing and employment opportunities. Flooding and drainage are also recurring urban challenges, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
The administration has also continued to focus on education and social intervention programmes. Education received one of the largest sectoral commitments under the 2026 budget, while infrastructure, healthcare and social protection remain prominent components of the government's development agenda. The scale of the 2026 appropriation makes effective budget implementation and transparency important issues to monitor throughout the fiscal year.
