Current Issues — Ondo State 2026
Ondo State in 2026 is being governed by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Olayide Adelami serving as Deputy Governor. Aiyedatiwa became governor in December 2023 following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and subsequently won the November 2024 governorship election. His administration is now focused on infrastructure, investment, industrial development and strengthening the state's internally generated revenue base.
The state's biggest fiscal development in 2026 is the implementation of the ₦524.41 billion 2026 Budget of Economic Consolidation. The approved budget provides approximately ₦303.58 billion for capital expenditure and ₦220.83 billion for recurrent expenditure, giving capital projects the larger share of the state's spending plan. Major priorities include roads, infrastructure, healthcare, education, economic development and human capital.
Ondo's revenue position has also improved significantly. The Ondo State Internal Revenue Service reported that the state generated about ₦60 billion in IGR in 2025, compared with lower collections in previous years. The improvement has been linked to stronger revenue administration, technology-driven collection and broader compliance. The 2026 approved budget also provides approximately ₦47.7 billion as internally generated revenue.
Industrialisation is becoming a major focus of the Aiyedatiwa administration. In March 2026, the state government announced investment agreements relating to a proposed Deep Sea Port and a $4 billion petrochemical and fertiliser plant. The projects are intended to expand the state's industrial base, attract private investment, create employment and increase economic activity along the coastal and southern parts of Ondo State.
Infrastructure remains another major issue. The government is pursuing several road projects across the state, including the Akure–Idanre road dualisation and major roads in Ondo South such as the Ajagba–Iju Osun–Akotogbo Road, Omotosho–Igbotako–Iju Odo Road and Okitipupa–Igbokoda dual carriageway. The government has also highlighted road rehabilitation as an important component of its wider economic development strategy.
Ondo State's political representation at the Senate changed in 2026 after Jimoh Ibrahim vacated the Ondo South seat following his appointment as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The seat became vacant in April 2026, and a by-election was subsequently held on 20 June 2026. Prof. Dayo Faduyile of the APC won the election and was inaugurated into the 10th Senate, joining Adeniyi Adegbonmire and Jide Ipinsagba as Ondo's three senators.
The state continues to face security concerns, particularly in some rural communities and forest areas where kidnapping, criminal activity and other security challenges remain concerns. The government has continued to work with security agencies to improve patrols and community safety while also linking infrastructure and economic development with broader security objectives.
Ondo's economy remains strongly connected to agriculture, cocoa production, oil and gas, bitumen, mining, fisheries and coastal commerce. The state possesses significant natural resources and has one of Nigeria's longest coastlines. The administration is increasingly seeking to convert these natural advantages into investment opportunities through industrial projects, agriculture, tourism and infrastructure development.
