Current Issues — Edo State 2026
Edo State in 2026 is being governed by Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who assumed office on 12 November 2024 alongside Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa. The administration has placed strong emphasis on infrastructure, education, healthcare, workers' welfare, transportation and economic development.
The state's 2026 approved budget is ₦939.85 billion, with ₦633.33 billion allocated to capital expenditure and ₦306.52 billion to recurrent expenditure. This gives capital spending a significantly larger share of the state budget and reflects the administration's emphasis on infrastructure and development projects. The official Edo State FY2026 budget document records total expenditure of ₦939.85 billion.
Edo's revenue position has also improved. The National Bureau of Statistics recorded ₦91.15 billion in Internally Generated Revenue in 2024, while the Edo State Internal Revenue Service reported that the state crossed the ₦100 billion IGR mark in 2025. The government has continued to modernise revenue collection through the Edo Revenue Administration System and enhanced central billing systems.
Workers' welfare remains another major issue. Edo State increased its minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000 per month in May 2025. The state government has also highlighted the regular payment of salaries and the employment and regularisation of workers as part of its social and economic policies.
The state's infrastructure programme remains a major focus, particularly road rehabilitation, transportation and public facilities. Projects include the development of the ultra-modern Benin Central Bus Terminal, improvement of major roads and continued investment in transport infrastructure. The administration has also prioritised education and healthcare, including recruitment and expansion of public-sector capacity.
Edo's fiscal position requires continued monitoring. According to Debt Management Office data reported for the first quarter of 2026, the state's domestic debt stock increased to approximately ₦172.37 billion as of 31 March 2026, following a substantial increase from its December 2025 position. The development makes debt management and responsible borrowing important issues for the state's medium-term finances.
Politically, Edo remains significant ahead of the 2027 general elections. The three senatorial districts are Edo North, Edo Central and Edo South. Senator Adams Oshiomhole represents Edo North, Senator Joe Ikpea represents Edo Central, while Senator Neda Imasuen represents Edo South. The 2027 Senate contests are already generating considerable political activity across the state.
The Edo State House of Assembly also experienced a leadership change in August 2026. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, emerged as Speaker after the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku. The change makes the current legislative leadership an important part of Edo's political affairs going into the final phase of the current administration's first term.
