Current Issues — Ogun State 2026
Ogun State in 2026 is experiencing rapid economic and infrastructure expansion under Governor Dapo Abiodun, with the state increasingly positioning itself as a major industrial, manufacturing and logistics hub in Nigeria. Its proximity to Lagos, access to major highways and concentration of factories have continued to attract investments in manufacturing, warehousing, agriculture, technology and real estate.
The state's ₦1.669 trillion 2026 Budget of Sustainable Legacy, signed into law at the beginning of 2026, places a strong emphasis on capital development. About ₦1.043 trillion is allocated to capital expenditure, while approximately ₦625.76 billion is allocated to recurrent expenditure. Major priorities include infrastructure, roads, transportation, education, healthcare, economic development and other projects intended to support the state's rapidly expanding population and industrial base.
Revenue generation remains one of Ogun's major fiscal issues. The state reported that its Internally Generated Revenue exceeded ₦240 billion in 2025, representing significant growth compared with previous years. At the same time, the 2026 budget projects substantially higher internally generated revenue and other internally sourced receipts. Maintaining this revenue growth while controlling expenditure and debt obligations remains important to the state's long-term fiscal sustainability.
Ogun's debt position has also attracted attention. The state government reported a total debt profile of approximately ₦494 billion as of early 2026, comprising about ₦194 billion in domestic debt and ₦300 billion in foreign debt. The government attributed much of the increase in the naira value of foreign debt to exchange-rate depreciation and maintained that borrowing has been used substantially to finance infrastructure and development projects.
Infrastructure development remains central to Ogun's economic strategy. The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport at Iperu is a major component of the state's emerging aviation and logistics network. The state is also developing industrial and economic clusters around Remo, Ijebu, Atan-Agbara, Magboro, Imeko-Afon-Awori and Abeokuta, with the objective of attracting manufacturing, logistics, agro-processing and technology investments.
Road infrastructure continues to be a major public concern because of the volume of industrial and commercial traffic moving through Ogun between Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. Projects such as the Agbara-Lusada-Atan corridor, Abeokuta-Sagamu routes and other regional roads are important to reducing transport bottlenecks and supporting the state's industrial economy.
Ogun also faces pressure from rapid population growth and urbanisation, particularly in communities bordering Lagos. Areas such as Ado-Odo/Ota, Ifo, Sagamu, Mowe, Ibafo, Magboro and other parts of the Lagos-Ogun corridor continue to experience residential expansion, traffic congestion, flooding, housing pressure and increased demand for public infrastructure.
Security remains another important governance issue. Kidnapping, land disputes, cult-related violence, highway crime and communal conflicts periodically affect parts of the state. The government and security agencies continue to focus on intelligence-led policing, community engagement and improved security around major industrial, commercial and transportation corridors.
Politically, Ogun remains firmly controlled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the executive and senatorial levels. Governor Dapo Abiodun is serving his second term, which runs until May 2027. The three senators representing Ogun's Central, East and West senatorial districts are also members of the APC, giving the governing party substantial political influence across the state.
